Carob Carob, or Ceratonia siliqua, is a very unique plant that goes back a long time in history. It belongs to the family Fabaceae and is mainly found in the Mediterranean region where it grows in warm climates and its tree may live up till 120 years. Its scientific name comes from the fact that its uniform seeds were used before as a standard measure of weight or carat. Carob is commonly referred to as St. Johns bread because John the Baptist is said to have sustained himself on carob while traveling in the wilderness. The plant is mainly used as a cocoa substitute and also to produce gum. |
