Curcuma is originally native to Southeast Asia, but later started to be cultivated in a large scale in the Middle East and North Africa.

It is a close relative to the Ginger root.

The genus name, Curcuma, is derived from the Arabic word Kurkum, meaning Saffron, which refers to its reddish color.
